PrintIt!
ShareWare
Version 2.0
First of all, thanks for trying PrintIt! You may copy this program
freely among anyone you want to give this program to, as long as no
fee is charged for copying or anything else, and this ZIP file
remains the way you got it!
Files in PRINTIT.ZIP should be:
PRINTIT.EXE (the program itself)
PRINTIT.DOC (what you are reading now)
SEE.COM (a text file viewer)
The sole purpose of this program is to allow you to print ASCII
text files WITHOUT printing over the perfs on fanfold paper.
(Don't you just hate that?). Well, so do I. So I wrote this
little program to avoid just that. PrintIt! should work with any
IBM, Epson, or compatible printer.
At the DOS prompt type:
PRINTIT <Enter>
PrintIt! will then prompt you for a file name. Enter any legal
DOS name and the program will search for the name you enter.
When entering the file name, you must enter the full name of the
file, including the extension if there is any.
If you hit <Enter> without a name, you will get an error message
and the program will exit. You will also get an error message if
you enter an invalid DOS name, or if the file doesn't exist.
PrintIt! will print any ASCII text file including those with
extended ASCII characters (borders and such). These include any
file ending with .TXT, .DOC, .BAS, and other text files.
However, Printit will not stop you from trying to print a binary
file, they are .COM, .EXE, .OVL and other binary files.
It will print, but the results would be the same if you used the
DOS command "type" on a binary file.
PrintIt! will handle lines up to 120 characters so you can print
in condensed mode for wide files, or in regular mode if you have
a wide-carriage printer. If your printer is set for 80 columns,
lines longer than 80 characters will simply wrap to the next line.
Any characters beyond 120 in length in a line will not be printed.
After entering a legal file name, PrintIt! will then ask you for
a number to pad the left margin with a number of spaces from 1
to 9, or <Enter> for none. This is so you can make room for a
three hole punch without putting holes through your text. Just
make sure that the lines in the file you are printing, plus the
pad you enter don't exceed 80, or part of the line will end up
being printed on the next line with no pad, unless you put the
printer in condensed mode to avoid this. Same goes for printing
in condensed mode and the length of the line plus the pad exceeds
120 characters in length. At the prompt for pad margin, you may
also press Esc, and the program will terminate. PrintIt! will
then ask you one last question before printing, and that is if you
want page numbers printed at the bottom of each page. You must
press <Enter> or N to proceed. The [Y] indicates the default
choice, and will print with page numbers simply by pressing <Enter>.
If you decide not to print the file, you can press Esc to terminate
the program.
Once under way, if you should happen to turn the printer off
for some reason, PrintIt! will detect this and terminate. Since
some of the file you are printing has already been sent to the
printers' buffer and cannot be resent, that portion will be lost
(as far as the printer is concerned) and there is no point in
waiting for the printer to come back on-line since the entire
document cannot be printed. If you put the printer off-line,
PrintIt! will simply wait for you to put it back on-line.
I have included the utility SEE.COM so you can look at a file
before trying to print it using PrintIt! The reason for this is
that some text files already have page breaks in them and if so,
you do not need to use PrintIt! on these files. If you do, you
will end up using a lot of extra paper because of the form feed
commands in the document itself, and those sent to the printer by
PrintIt! according to the number of lines counted. To use SEE, at
the DOS prompt type:
SEE [drive:\path\filename] <Enter>
Drive and pathname are optional, you can just enter the filename.
Use PageUp, PageDown, or the arrow keys to step through the file.
When you are done looking through the file, press Esc to exit.
If you see any ^L, or symbols, you will not need to use Printit!
as these are form feed characters for the printer. To print these
files simply type at the DOS prompt:
COPY [filename] PRN <Enter>
PrintIt! can be called from any directory you are in, as long as
you have PrintIt! in a directory which is in your path. The file
name you enter to print must be in the current directory. Typing
in drive letters or path names will not work. (I said this program
was little!) But that's about the only annoyance in this program.
I offer no warranty or guarantee with this program, it works for me,
and can't see why it wouldn't work for anybody else. So there!
As of version 2.0, PrintIt! is ShareWare. If you pay $10, you will
be a registered user, and you will receive the next major upgrade
at no cost. Please specify 5.25" or 3.5" disk. Otherwise, if you
just feel like contributing to the bank account of a delinquent,
then the cost is only $5. Feel free to send in suggestions to
improve PrintIt!. Mail contributions to:

If you want a printout of this document, use PrintIt! or use the
DOS "copy" command. Keep in mind that the symbol mentioned above
will send an unwanted form feed to be sent to your printer unless
you use a simple text editor to get rid of it first. (Not the ^L,
since it was typed in and not produced as an actual form feed
character).
Changes since version 1.0
Fixed bug where full 12 character name resulted in "Invalid DOS name".
Ability to Escape from program after file name is entered.
Program detects printer being turned off during printing.
